A Friday Night at MKM Stadium: Hull City vs Sheffield United

When Hull City faced Sheffield United on a Friday night, we were lucky to grab tickets and make the most of an exciting evening out. Although City didn’t secure the win, the night was full of thrills, an electric atmosphere, and some amazing food, making it all worth the trip.

No travel experience would be complete without mentioning how we got there. Anyone familiar with Hull on match days knows how congested Anlaby Road can become, especially when the MKM Stadium is hosting a big game. Long queues into Walton Street and the even longer wait to exit are part of the usual experience for drivers. Fortunately, East Yorkshire buses offer a far more relaxed alternative.

Anlaby Road is well-serviced by buses, with East Yorkshire providing several routes to ensure smooth match day travel. Whether you're coming from Anlaby (routes 152, 153), Swanland (153), Hessle (66, 55, 350), Cottingham (63, 154), Wold Road, Holderness Road, Longhill and Bilton (56) or farther away like Goole, South Cave, or Brough (55), there’s a route for you. If you're in Willerby, the 154 bus is a convenient option, and the 54 along Spring Bank is perfect for those coming from Willerby Road. For anyone arriving via Hessle Road, the 57 has you covered. And if you're travelling from towns like Beverley, Hornsea, or Withernsea into Hull Interchange, it’s just a quick hop on any of the Anlaby Road buses to the stadium—all for just £2 per journey!

For this match, the three of us agreed to meet directly at the stadium. I took the 66 from Hessle, a friend caught the 154 from Anlaby, and another friend came in on the 63 from Cottingham. With East Yorkshire’s £2 fare, we all enjoyed affordable, hassle-free journeys, leaving more room in the budget for drinks once we arrived!

Boarding was a breeze—thanks to a friendly driver and contactless payments, there was no need to dig around for change!

The walk from the bus stop to the MKM Stadium is always a chance to soak up the pre-match excitement, with fans making their way toward the grounds. Once we arrived, we headed straight to the hospitality suite. If you’ve never tried match day hospitality at the MKM, I highly recommend it! The food was fantastic, the service outstanding, and the atmosphere was perfect for getting into the match day spirit.

We even had the chance to hear from ex-Hull City player, Stephen McPhee who pleated for Hull between 2005 and 2007. He shared memories from his time at the club and gave his predictions for the game. The post-match discussion with the host and former player also added to the evening’s experience.

The buildup to the game was electric. Even though Hull City didn’t win, the family-friendly atmosphere kept everyone’s spirits high, especially the kids around us, who were having a great time.

There’s something special about a night match at MKM Stadium—the energy of the crowd, the glow of the floodlights, and the sense of community that comes with supporting your local team, win or lose. The bus journey there and back made the whole experience stress-free, and it's hard to imagine doing it any other way.

While Hull City may not have clinched the result we were hoping for (and we’ll avoid taking football politics on here), the night was still a great success. With fantastic company, delicious food, and an affordable, convenient way to travel, it was a Friday night to remember.

Instead of heading straight home, we made our way back to Hessle to enjoy a few post-match drinks and chat about the game. Thankfully, the 66 bus provided a warm ride back—is it big coat weather already?

Note: a massive thank you to both Hull City and East Yorkshire for making this happen.
