How to Spend a Day in Hull using the bus (X46/X47)

Travelling east out of York, within easy reach on a single X46 bus journey, are some proper pieces of Yorkshire. All the way to the underrated city of Hull, this is a recommended ride for a day trip out or a weekend away. Passing through the marvellous market towns of Pocklington and Beverley - both wonderful places to visit themselves - you’ll reach Hull Interchange in approximately two hours; and there’s plenty of great things to do when here… Eclectic attractions include this port city’s handsome marina and its award-winning aquarium The Deep, bringing sea life up close with over 5000 animals.

Hopping off the bus at Carr Lane is a short walk to these, and equally nearby is Hull’s picturesque old town. From there, you’ll discover why Hull was the UK City of Culture 2017 and how it’s built on that legacy… Ferens Art Gallery hosted the Turner Prize in its Grade II listed building on Queen Victoria Square and has exceptional permanent and temporary exhibitions. Independent spaces such as GROUND are also well worth a visit from the nearby College Street bus stop to experience the creativity of Hull’s people. And you can see the city’s heroes celebrated by statues, at the Wilberforce Memorial in Queen’s Gardens and of Phillip Larkin at Paragon Interchange.

Hull also has several trails to see the city in different ways: there’s an immersive audio walk to take visitors through 60 years of Hull music history narrated by native comedian Lucy Beaumont; and the city’s fishing heritage is showcased on the Seven Seas Fish Trail, a fun exploration of 41 fish sculptures. Indeed, when in Hull there’s lots of fab fresh fish to sample - but that’s not all there is to eat here. For breakfast or lunch, or for coffee and bakes, head to Hearth Bakery in the old town for quality food in a charming environment - and their restaurant is equally excellent for dinner too. Follow it up with indulgent sweet treats in the family friendly 42nd East Bakehouse at St Stephen’s Shopping Centre near to Hull Interchange. Beside the marina is a lovely setting for another delicious restaurant to dine at, which is where Ambiente will serve you tasty tapas. Also overlooking the water, Furley & Co. is the perfect place for drinks, whether outside with a cocktail or indoors with a beer. The X47 runs well into the evening if you fancy a few more in the havens of Hull, before being chauffeured handsomely home to York.
