A Day Trip From York Using the Bus: Where to Visit in Beverley
4 weeks ago

Lying between the coast and the scenic Yorkshire Wolds, Beverley boasts an impressive Gothic minster and a thriving high street, making it the perfect destination for a day out. If you fancy letting someone else drive so that you can relax, this characterful market town is easy to reach from York using East Yorkshire Buses’ X46/X47 service. This runs every day and departs from The Stonebow or York Railway Station, taking around an hour and a half to reach Beverley. Here are some of the best places to eat and shop during your trip:
Start your morning with coffee and brunch at Cafe V
Upon your arrival in Beverley, you may want to set yourself up for the day with a hearty breakfast or brunch. Cafe V is located on Sow Hill Road - a minute’s walk from the town’s bus station - and it serves a range of tempting options that are prepared using locally-sourced ingredients. These include a regular or vegetarian ‘full Yorkshire’ breakfast, yummy filled croissants or a breakfast hash served with rustic bread and a fried egg. All can be accompanied by a nutritious smoothie or coffee of your choice, from an espresso macchiato to a mocha made with real chocolate flakes.
Hit the shops
After you’ve indulged a little, you can then get out and explore the town. Beverley is known for its varied retail offering, which includes exciting independents as well as many of your favourite big brands.
If you’d like to treat someone special or even yourself, The Lemon Tree on Butcher Row is filled with all kinds of gorgeous gifts, from hand-poured scented candles from the Yorkshire Candle Company to cute baby clothes and toys, plus cards, homeware and stationery featuring nature-inspired art by Wrendale Designs.
In the same street, you’ll find the family-run Beverley Bookshop, which stocks a curated selection of great reads, including children’s books and the latest bestsellers along with signed editions from its frequent author visits. If you can't find exactly what you’re looking for, the shop’s knowledgeable staff have access to a catalogue of over 13 million books which can be delivered the next day.
If menswear is what you seek, look no further than The Modern Draper. This contemporary clothing and lifestyle store on North Bar Within sells pieces from an eclectic range of brands, all of which share a common factor: authenticity. These include Birkenstock, Fred Perry, HUF, Stetson, Henri Lloyd, Carhartt WIP, Nudie Jeans Co, Fjallraven and more.
The Pamperhouse’s beautiful, handpicked homeware and fashion accessories are the perfect way to elevate your decor or wardrobe. You can brighten up your rooms with their pretty and long-lasting dried flowers, or bring some sophistication to your table with Danish crockery from Lene Bjerre. This calming boutique on Ladygate also stocks candles, trinkets, jewellery and soft toys by Jellycat.
Finish with dinner at Figaro
A delicious dinner at Figaro might be the perfect way to bring your time in Beverley to a close. This award-winning Italian on New Walker Gate has been one of the town’s most popular eateries for many years and it offers a warm welcome to all. You can begin a meal here with starters such as halloumi croquettes or a plate of antipasto, before tucking into pizza or pasta, barbecued meat and fish, or specialities including fragrant ginger chicken or a slow-cooked lamb shoulder. To follow, Figaro’s dessert list features options like heavenly sticky poached figs with amaretto and vegan ice cream, or a fruity mango and coconut dome.
Returning to York after your day in Beverley couldn’t be easier if you’re travelling by bus. The X46 and X47 both depart from the town’s Bus Station, which is a five minute walk from Figaro. The last bus leaves after 7pm on weekdays, 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 5pm on Sundays. Plan your journey using the East Yorkshire Buses website or app.
