This International Women’s Day, on 8th March, we’re spotlighting some of the women shaping our culture, supporting our teams, and strengthening our business, not just today, but every day.

International Women's Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years.

March 8th marks International Women’s Day  a time to recognise and celebrate the remarkable contributions of women across all industries including the talented women who help shape East Yorkshire Buses every day.

The bus and transport industry has traditionally been seen as male dominated, but we’re proud to be changing that. Through active recruitment, career development opportunities, and by highlighting the achievements of our female colleagues, we’re showing that a career in buses is welcoming, rewarding, and full of opportunities for women to thrive.

This year, the theme of International Women’s Day 2026 is Give to Gain. 

Give to Gain celebrates the power of support and reciprocity. When people, organisations, and communities give generously, opportunities for women grow. Giving isn’t about losing it’s about creating more. When women succeed, we all benefit.

Whether it’s sharing knowledge, offering mentorship, providing resources, supporting education and training, advocating for visibility, or donating time, every act helps build a stronger, more connected, and supportive world for women and for everyone. 

This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible women who make up our team at East Yorkshire Buses. From driving and engineering to customer service and leadership, our female colleagues play a vital role in keeping our communities connected every day.

Meet Bex

Tell us a little bit about yourself
I'm Bex, I'm 45 and a proud girl mum to Abbie who also works here in the Commercial team part time. I have worked for East Yorkshire for nearly 4 years now, in several roles, including Customer Service and currently as Recruitment Supervisor.

What's your favourite thing about being part of Team EY?
My favourite part of being part of team EY is, it is so diverse, the people I meet are so different, and always get a little jab of excitement when women come through the application process and do well. While I don’t drive the buses myself, I get to be part of the journey, supporting new starters as they go through training school and build confidence in their roles. I call them my “babies,” and I feel a real sense of pride, much like a mum, when I see them doing well and enjoying their work. I also enjoy keeping in touch with them months later to hear how they are progressing.

Which women in your life inspire you the most?
It would have to be my mum and daughter. My mum fought Ovarian cancer bravely for almost 7 years until she lost the battle in 2010 but always fought every obstacle that was thrown in her way. My daughter is currently working towards her university degree in graphic design and animation while working two jobs. She is the first person on my side of the family to attend university.

What advice can you give women considering a career in transport?  
It is such a worthwhile role. You're in the heart of the community, helping people, and sometimes you are the only person a customer sees that day, making a real difference. You meet some great people, both customers as well as colleagues. Over time, you get your regulars who will become like a friend to you, and who you look forward to seeing.

Meet Jodie

Tell us a little bit about yourself
My name is Jodie; I am 32 years old. For the last 7 years I was a civil servant and recently became a bus driver for East Yorkshire.
 
What's your favourite thing about being part of Team EY?
Due to the fact I am a new starter to East Yorkshire, my favourite thing about East Yorkshire is that all the staff I have met have been helpful, supportive and welcoming and I already feel like I am part of the team.
 
Which women in your life inspire you the most?
The first woman to inspire me would be my mum because she has always been my biggest supporter, she was a strong woman who had a challenging life and was always a fighter and never gave up.

I also have a good friend who is also part of the East Yorkshire team, she has been an inspiration as she has helped me along the way since applying for the role and has been supportive with my training and continues to support me.

What advice can you give women considering a career in transport?  
The advice I would give to other women looking at becoming a bus driver is to go for it. It may be big and it may look scary but until you have sat in the driver’s seat and tried it you will never know what your capabilities are.

Meet Lauren

Tell us about yourself?

Hi, I’m Lauren. I’m 30 years old and have spent the past few years working in retail. I’m a proud mum to two amazing girls who mean the world to me. In my spare time, I love going to the cinema, enjoying a good coffee, listening to music, and adding to my tattoo collection.

What’s your favourite thing about being part of team EY?

Everyone is so lovely, I’ve truly been made to feel welcome and supported from day one. It’s such a friendly team, and knowing there’s always someone there to help or encourage you makes all the difference.

Which women in your life inspire you the most?

My sister and my mum, they are both amazing women and if I inspire to be anything for the rest of my life its as strong as them both.

What advice can you give women considering a career in transport?

Go for it, we can do anything we believe we can do.
