Celebrating our Engineering Apprentices

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we're celebrating the talented apprentices who are shaping the future of engineering. Meet Corey, Darcy, and Bradley - three of our passionate engineering apprentices - who share their journey, inspirations, and advice for anyone considering this path.

East Yorkshire Buses is a proud member of the Go-Ahead Group, a company that continues to set the standard for excellence in apprenticeships. In 2024, Go-Ahead was once again recognised as the top apprenticeship employer in the transport industry for the third consecutive year.

Meet Bradley – Mechanical Apprentice

Brad, 17, joined straight from college and has been with us for around 4–5 months. He describes his apprenticeship as “probably the best move I’ve done in life,” enjoying the camaraderie and hands-on experience, saying, “I’m loving it here; everybody is a good laugh, and you kind of fit in as soon as you walk through the door.” Brad has always been interested in working in the garage, inspired by his dad, who has worked in the industry for years. Brad wanted to build a career in engineering and chose East Yorkshire based on strong recommendations.

A motorbike enthusiast, Brad enjoys fixing up bikes and track racing. His advice to future apprentices? “Definitely go for it. Get your head in, get stuck in, show up early, and always give a hand to whoever needs it. Give your all into everything you do.”

Meet Darcy – Electrical Apprentice

At 19, Darcy is about 4–5 months into his apprenticeship and is thoroughly enjoying the new experience. He always wanted to work in the electrical field, especially working with large vehicles. His interest in engineering started in secondary school, where he loved taking things apart and figuring out how they worked.

A massive rugby fan, Darcy believes success in an apprenticeship comes down to determination. “Keep your head down and always try your best. Ask questions - no question is a silly question. Always put yourself out there.”

Meet Corey – Body Apprentice

Corey, 16, started his body shop apprenticeship in September last year. His journey so far has been exciting, with plenty of support from experienced colleagues. He has always been passionate about buses.

Outside of work, Corey enjoys hanging out with friends, bus and train spotting, and cycling. His advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship? “Go for it, definitely!”

We are incredibly proud of Corey, Darcy, Bradley, and all of our apprentices who are developing the skills and knowledge that will drive the industry forward. Together, they are proving that apprenticeships offer an invaluable pathway to success and making a lasting impact on the world of engineering.

Andrew Benstead, Engineering Director, says: “Apprenticeships are the future of East Yorkshire Buses, helping us train, grow, and empower the next generation to keep our communities moving forward.”
