We're looking for Experienced Drivers in Pocklington! (School Contracts)

Our professional drivers provide safe, reliable and efficient passenger journeys in Hull, Scarborough and across the East Riding, providing our valued passengers with the best quality travel experience through their friendly, knowledgeable and helpful approach.

We are currently recruiting for experienced bus drivers for East Yorkshire’s school contracts, working during school term times, based in Pocklington.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing the cheerful and friendly face of the company, greeting passengers courteously and treating everyone with respect and dignity.
  • Driving company vehicles carefully and safely, complying with all legal and regulatory requirements and company procedures.
  • Advising passengers of fares, taking payment via cash, contactless or valid tickets and passes, and accounting for fares processed.
  • Being a team-player, ensuring that our services operate come rain or shine, day in day out.

Why choose EY?

Established since 1926, we have an excellent reputation in the local area. We can provide job security and ongoing training and there are no costs for training or uniform (provided you remain with us for a period of two years or more).

What makes a great candidate for this role?

You must have great customer services skills and be a team player. For this role, we are looking for those who already hold a PCV licence. A good grasp of basic English and maths is essential as you’ll be dealing with passengers on a daily basis, and a knowledge of the local area is helpful. You need to look smart and professional, too.

You will also need to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if we offer you a position - that's a disclosure of any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, final warnings etc.

How does a school contract role work?

We operate a lot of school buses during term time, so we require more drivers during these times than during school holidays. Schools contract drivers will work between around 35 and 39 weeks a year, depending on the contract term dates. You will drive buses for school and college contracts. The exact number of hours worked will depend on which services you drive, but is usually around 17-25 hours per week. Overtime and rest days can be worked.

How do annualised hours work?

Drivers will work between around 35 and 39 weeks in the year but be paid 52 weeks of the year pro rata. These means you will still have an income throughout the whole year, even while enjoying time not at work. You would be free to use the weeks not worked as you wish, and are not expected to work. Drivers remain an employee of East Yorkshire during this time, so are prohibited from working for another PCV operator and there are tax implications for anyone who takes on secondary employment during this period.

What are pay and benefits like?

Once you're fully trained, pay is £13.50 per hour, with overtime at basic plus £1.50 per hour.

We also provide a company pension, free bus travel for you and someone in your household and up to two children (under 16, when travelling with a passholder) within the area, an employee discount scheme and lots of other benefits.
