Seasonal Experienced Bus Driver - Scarborough

Want to be a bus driver?  Apply now!

Our professional drivers provide safe, reliable and efficient passenger journeys in Hull, Scarborough and across the East Riding, providing our valued passengers with the best quality travel experience through their friendly, knowledgeable and helpful approach.

We also run seasonal tourist services, such as our popular buses to the east coast holiday villages, Scarborough Park and Ride, and our fun seafront open top buses.

We are currently recruiting for experienced bus drivers to work for the summer season (March-October) at our Scarborough depot, driving a mixture of local bus services and tourist services.

Key responsibilities

Providing the cheerful and friendly face of the company, greeting passengers courteously and treating everyone with respect and dignity.

Driving company vehicles carefully and safely, complying with all legal and regulatory requirements and company procedures.

Advising passengers of fares, taking payment via cash, contactless or valid tickets and passes, and accounting for fares processed.

Being a team-player, ensuring that our services operate come rain or shine, day in day out.

Why work for us?

Established since 1926, we have an excellent reputation in the local area.  We can provide job security and ongoing training and there are no costs for training or uniform (provided you remain with us for a period of two years or more) and we pay you from day one so you can earn while you learn.

What makes a great candidate for this role?

You must have great customer services skills and be a team player.  For this seasonal role, we are looking for those who already hold a PCV licence.  A good grasp of basic English and maths is essential as you’ll be dealing with passengers on a daily basis, and a knowledge of the local area is helpful.  You need to look smart and professional, and be willing to work shifts.

How does a seasonal role work?

In the Scarborough area, we run a lot of tourist and summer services, so we require more drivers in peak season than during the winter.  Seasonal drivers will work from 1 March until 31 October, and will not be expected to work during November, December, January and February.

Seasonal drivers can choose to be employed for just the summer season, or they can choose to have annualised hours (see below for details of annualised hours).

What are pay and benefits like?

Once you're fully trained with your probationary period complete, pay is £9.76 per hour, with overtime at basic plus £1.80 per hour.

You can choose to work for just the summer season, or you can choose to be employed on an annualised hours basis.  Annualised hours are where you work a defined period of 34 weeks each year (1 March until 31 October), and you will be guaranteed 38 hours per week during this 34 week period.  (Rest days and overtime can also be worked if you wish).  Your 38 hours will be added to the appropriate amount of holidays, and the total is averaged out and paid over a 52 week period - this amounts to a gross weekly wage of approximately £290 per week.  Therefore, during November, December, January and February you will still be paid the same amount, even though you will not be expected to work.  You will be free to dispose of your time as you see fit during the period you are not expected to work, although as you will still be an employee of East Yorkshire, you will not be able to work for another PCV operator, and there may be tax implications for anyone who takes on secondary employment during this period.

We also provide a company pension, free bus travel for you and your partner and up to two children (under 16, when travelling with a passholder) within the area, an employee discount scheme for you and your partner and lots of other other benefits.
